A greta day was had by everyone here on Waitangi Day.

We had wonderful weather, a wonderful turn out and altogether a wonderful day.

Thansk you to everyone who attended and made the celebrations special. Here area few photo’s of the day.

10.30 Powhiri on marae

11.30 Chatham Island Moriori room opening

11.45 Citizenship ceremony

1.00 Hangi lunch ($10 adult, $5 child)

2.30 Children’s races – tug of war- lolly scramble etc.

3.45 Waka on Opara Stream – high tide

5.00 Museum closes

There are activities an demonstrations through out the day from 11am – 5pm

Then of course there is the beach which is the safest beach for swimming on Banks Peninsula. You can take a break from the fetivities, have a swim then return in time for the waka.

Bring a picnic tea and make it a full day or come out early and camp down at the camping ground for the whole weekend.

Waitangi Day 2012

Waitangi Day 2012 is coming very fast and we are all busy getting organised for the celebrations. There is lots of new displays that we are frantically trying to get finished so come out and see what we have been up to.

We are privaledged to hold a citizenship ceremony here with the Mayor of Christchurch attendiing. The support we get from Christchurch City Council for this is great and we are all looking forward to it.

We also have stalls with all sorts of produce and goods to buy and other groups displying information from around the Peninsula and Christchurch. (If anyone is onterested in having a stall please contact us at the museum, they are FREE).

The 60ft waka we house in a shed by the river will also be paddling up the river at high tide (3.45pm). This is probably the most exciting part of the day for children.

Also available to buy is a hangi for lunch, tickets available on the day at $10 per adult and $5 per child….cheapest and healthiest lunch out.

Christmas 2011

Everyone here at the museum would like to wish you all a happy and safe Christmas/ holiday break.

We are closed only one day a year and that of course is Christmas Day.

So hope you all have a wonderful time with friends and family. Keep safe and be sun smart.

Cruise ships 2011

We have had nine tour groups in so far with all the cruise ships that have been docking in Akaroa due to not being able to dock at Lyttleton and have met some lovely people.

We have had some great feedback from both the visitors and the tour guides which is wonderful. many photo’s have been taken and many have made enquiries about returning to the area for a longer visit in the future. This shows what a wonderful experience New Zealand is giving these visitors and how friendly kiwi’s are.

Thank you to all who have made it possible for us to show off our beautiful country and especially the fabulous collection we have here in Okains Bay. Keep up the good work!

Snow on Banks Peninsula

On Saturday 5th Novemeber we all woke to a chilly morning. Looking up the hills there was a light dusting of snow….no wonder it was cold.

We were heading to Hororata for the day and contemplated staying put for all of 5 minutes. However the higher we got, the more snow! Then heading down to Little River there was even more snow…..take a look…..highly unusual for this time of year!

Mr Kerry Howe just donated a superb,e arly 1800 Taonga to our musuem.

It is made of whale bone and beautifully carved. We feel very privialged to have this included in our collection and now takes pride of place in the cabinet within our Whare Taonga.

Some of the students at Okains Bay School have been taking photo’s that they think would make good postcards. We have loaded some on here and would like some opinions as to what others think would make great postcards for Okains Bay.

Clothing Needed Please

We need a collection of children’s clothing, hats and shoes that we can use in our authentic 1872 school.
This is so children who visit can dress up and have their photo taken in the school as if attending.
If anyone has anything they can donate we would really appreciate it and can be contacted here or via our email.
We are happy to refund postage.
We also keep a record of all items donated to us for future generations. Below are some examples to give you an idea of what we need.
